What does a GSTIN tell you?

How a GSTIN is structured

A GSTIN is always 15 characters long and follows a fixed pattern that encodes information about the taxpayer:

  • Characters 1–2 — 2-digit state code (e.g. 27 for Maharashtra, 07 for Delhi)
  • Characters 3–12 — 10-character PAN of the taxpayer
  • Character 13 — entity number for multiple registrations in the same state
  • Character 14 — always the letter Z
  • Character 15 — check digit (alphanumeric)
